Rolls-Royce SMR Graduate Programme will develop tomorrow’s nuclear safety experts

Rolls-Royce SMR has launched its Safety and Regulatory Affairs Graduate Programme, a major stride forward in developing the next generation of specialists to help Rolls-Royce SMR transform the way nuclear projects are delivered.

The new programme will help graduates gain the skills and confidence to shape the safe design, operation, and performance of Rolls-Royce Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) – the UK’s first domestic civil nuclear technology in more than a generation.

Mark Salisbury, Rolls-Royce SMR’s Head of Regulatory Affairs, said: “Safety, security, safeguards and environmental protection underpin everything we do at Rolls-Royce SMR. This programme offers talented graduates the opportunity to work alongside industry-leading nuclear, safety, and regulatory experts and contribute to the safe delivery of our SMR technology.”

The programme is open to graduates from engineering, physics, mathematics, systems engineering, risk, safety, reliability and other STEM disciplines. Successful applicants will grow their careers in one of four specialist areas:

  • Environment, Safety, Security & Safeguards Ensuring that engineered safety systems and environmental protections perform as designed, while supporting sustainability, compliance and emergency preparedness.
  • Internal Hazards Engineering Analysing and mitigating risks from internal events such as fire, flooding, or equipment failure – a crucial part of creating resilient nuclear systems.
  • External Hazards Assessing risks from natural and environmental events, including extreme weather, seismic activity, and climate-related factors, to support long-term operational resilience.
  • Probabilistic Safety Assessment Using advanced modelling and risk analysis to support safety cases, regulatory submissions, and the detailed understanding of system performance.

GBE-N recently announced that Wylfa on Ynys Môn (Anglesey) was selected as the site for the UK’s first Small Modular Reactors delivering up to 1.5 GW of low-carbon electricity. This will support the UK’s net zero goals and create significant economic benefit, including 8,000 quality long-term British jobs with many more exciting opportunities to come in North Wales and across the UK.

Rolls-Royce SMR has also been selected as preferred bidder in the Great British Energy – Nuclear (GBE-N) SMR competition and by European utility, ČEZ, to build up to three gigawatts of new nuclear power in the Czech Republic.
